• bob-bob: Cocoa Text System key bindings don't use readline. Take a look at Jacob Rus's articles I linked to for detailed information.

Emacs Commands Work in OS X, How Awesome is That?
• The effect isn't necessarily identical because Command-A is Select All. And James was counting the Control key press; you didn't count your Command key press. Relax what, my intended accuracy? Both of you might have picked better examples. :)

• Command-A Backspace != Control-A Control-K

• The Control key used as the web accesskey prefix character can be annoyingly interfering with its Emacs-style command usage, e.g. when composing forum posts. In case you've missed 'em, Jacob Rus' articles are informative: Cocoa Text System @ http://www.hcs.harvard.edu/~jrus/site/cocoa-text.html Cocoa Text System - Usable Selectors @ http://www.hcs.harvard.edu/~jrus/site/selectors.html Cocoa Text System - Default System Key Bindings @ http://www.hcs.harvard.edu/~jrus/site/system-bindings.html

What's bugging you?
• Well, Apple would probably get more of my cash if they offered an affordable (and optional, of course) iTunes "subscription" service than they do now with the purchase-only model. The amount and diversity of music I'd listen to would greatly increase if I didn't have to buy all of it (which I definitely can't afford to do). And I could still buy (from wherever) what I'd really prefer to own for some reason. I also think the iMix(?) feature on iTunes would become more useful and fun (for me) with subscriptions. As it is now I couldn't care less what other people like because I'm not going to make purchases just to see if we share similar tastes. Hmm, looks like iMix is gone though I did find Celebrity Playlists with a search. I could explore existing non-iTunes alternatives like Rhapsody but integration with iTunes is the kind of convenience my wife would appreciate. Most arguments I've seen against music subscriptions are uncompelling, from people who obviously have no personal interest in them while failing to realize the value they can have for others. And sensible explanations, like Kristin's here, will never change some of their stubborn minds.

Music Subscriptions Could Work, Eventually
• Re: Most of the Apple forums with iPhoto hangs have them being fixed by deleting some file or the other, and none of those fixes have worked. Trouble with Apple Discussions and other "amateur" support groups is when people offer help without really understanding (or at least explaining, if they do) posible implications and side effects of their suggestions, which can lead to more problems than you started with if you follow them. Re: I’m generally very conservative with major-release upgrades I'm relatively conservative that way, patient enough to wait until developers of apps I rely on resolve compatibility issues (if any) to my satisfaction. For instance, I'll keep running Tiger until DEVONthink Pro is stable on Leopard. It's hard to have sympathy for certain earlier adopters who won't accept responsibility for problems caused by naively upgrading without having considered incompatibility consequences. Re: I am glad to hear that the upgrade solved the problem for you, it makes it worthwhile for me to upgrade my iLife to the latest version. Thanks. The upgrade from '07 to '08 was worth it to me even for iMovie '08 since it's more convenient for editing digital camera movie clips than previous versions. Some of the brouhaha over it is sensible and understandable, though some people are easily angered and looking for reasons to complain about *anything* Apple changes. Have fun!

What's bugging you?
• Hi Sanjay. Amazing how it took almost two years to find someone else who might actually be suffering with the same frustrating iPhoto bug that I did. Lucky I had notification on here or I'd have missed your post. :) I'm glad to report that the mysterious problem disappeared when I upgraded to iPhoto 6. And so far I haven't noticed any issues with iPhoto 7 (from iLife '08) and the combination of photos imported from my SD800 and others cameras. Of course there's no guarantee that upgrading will fix your problem but if the symptoms are really the same then it might be worth trying. For me the iPhoto 6 -> 7 upgrade was a good investment so you might be satisfied with the changes from 5 to 5 even if your problem persists (though my positive hunch is it won't). Good luck! And hopefully it won't be another two years before you drop by again to report what you end up doing. :)

• Yep, dragging that Finder proxy icon to a variety of application windows (e.g. Terminal) is quite useful.

10 Things Every Programmer Should Know For Their First Job
• Re: Make friends with IT And, among other things, don't arrogantly assume your programming skill and experience makes you think you know how to do IT's job better than they do. Funny how certain people are compelled to tell IT what to do while IT couldn't care less about telling them how to do their job.
